Western Red Cedar is a popular material for cedar shingles. Eastern White is also used. The shingles may be Handsplit and Resawn, Tapersplit, Straight-split, or Tapersawn. Hip and Ridge Units are also available. The term Shakes is used to describe more rustic, rough-hewn shingles. Shingles and Shakes come in varying lengths, usually 16, 18 or 24 inches, and in random widths. Cedar shingles may be used for both roofing and siding. Designer shingles are available, with a range of decorative end shapes. These include mitred, faceted, rounded, pointed, and concave shapes. Cedar shingles may be supplied with natural finish, or stained to customer requirements.

Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau. The Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau, based in Sumas, Washington, is a trade association of firms supplying Cedar Shakes and Cedar Shingles. It has a comprehensive website, which is organized into the following main sections: Products Codes & Testing, Installation & Maintenance, and Frequently Asked Questions about Shingles. Fraser. Fraser Cedar, based in Edmunston, New Brunswick, Canada, was founded in 1990 by Don Fraser. It is now a leading supplier of cedar, including cedar shingles, to the North American market. Its shingle products are available in both Eastern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar. They may be supplied in natural finish, or factory stained on all six sides in one or two coats (depending on customer requirements) with Cabot Stains. The shingles are kiln-dried in a dehumidification dry kiln. The F-Shingle range is available in a range of curved, pointed and faceted shapes.


Valley Lumber Sales. Valley Lumber Sales, based in Knoxville, Tennessee, has been a leading distributor of Western Red Cedar Shakes and Red Cedar Shingles since 1973. The products are suitable for application as roofing shingles and as siding. Roofing shingles are available in 16", 18" and 24" lengths. Thickness is approximately half an inch. Roofing Shakes are available in three forms: Heavy Split & Resawn, Medium Split & Resawn, and Tapersawn. A Split and Resawn Shake is sawn on the backside, with the face being naturally split, giving it a highly textured surface on the outside.
