ABOUT OUTDOOR CARPETS

Although outdoor carpets can be made from natural fiber, such as jute or hessian, the overwhelming majority are made from a synthetic polypropylene material such as Olefin. There are three main forms of construction for outdoor carpet: grass, needle punch, and loop. Grass outdoor carpet has a grass look, similar to Astroturf. In addition to green, it is available in a range of colors, including bright blue for poolside or marine use. Needle punch and loop outdoor carpet is made in the same way as indoor carpet and has a similar appearance, but being 100% polypropylene is entirely impervious to weather.

Outdoor carpeting is available in a wide range of colors and patterns. It can be cleaned by thorough brooming, by hosing, or by scrubbing.

CHOOSING THE BEST TYPE

The first consideration is whether you want something that will look like grass, or something that will look like carpet. In other words, do you want to imitate nature, or bring the interior look to an outdoor patio or deck?

Grass-like

Outdoor grass-like carpet, sometimes known as Landscape Carpet, is widely used for artificial sports surfaces in schools, colleges, and sports clubs. It can also be used to make an artificial putting green to play golf in your yard, or to fill a space in a back yard. Some types are designed to be glued down; others are designed to be laid over sand. Some types incorporate a cushioned foam backing.

It is normally made of Olefin fiber, which is highly resistant to damp and to ultra-violet radiation. It is available in 6ft and 12ft widths, with a one year outdoor fade/wear warranty. A wide range of colors is available, including light and dark green, brown, grey and even bright or dark blue. The blue colors are designed for use with swimming pools. In general we would advise using darker or muted colors; the bright colors look very artificial indeed.

Needle punch

Outdoor needle punch carpet is also made of Olefin fiber, but has the look of indoor carpet rather than grass. The surface is of irregular carpet-like loops. and the available colors include brown, red, green, blue, and beige. Outdoor loop carpets are similar, being also made from Olefin fiber, but with a tighter loop giving a much smoother finish.

For deck or patio an alternative to overall carpet is an outdoor rug. These are available in a wide range of colors and designs, traditional and contemporary.
