ABOUT PAINT

There are two main types of house paint: Primers (sometimes known as Sealers) and Finish. Both types of paint may be used for interiors or exteriors. Primers seal the surface, and provide a key for the finish paint. They need to be used on bare wood and metal, and on previously painted surfaces that have been repaired or are suffering from flaking or peeling. Primers can also block out stains, such as water stains, crayon, smoke, soot, or ink.

There are two main types of Finish: Latex and Alkyd (sometimes known as oil-based). Alkyd is durable, and can provide a high gloss. Latex has the advantages that it cleans up with soap and water, dries quickly, and has less odor than Alkyd. The more expensive Latex use 100% acrylic resins, and less water, compared to cheaper Latex. There are four sheens, giving increasing levels of light reflection: Flat, Satin Finish, Semi Gloss, and Gloss.
